Taurus Quartet

Taurus Quartet, consisting of Martijn Vink-cello, Vincent Hepp-viola, Liesbeth Baelus and Wietse Beels-violin, celebrates its fifth anniversary in 2017.

During those five years, they have performed in venues such as Flagey, Bozar, Concertgebouw Brugge, the Handelsbeurs, the Bijloke, Festival de Stavelot, Novecento, Flanders Festival, Festival Musiq3, Saintes (FR) Toonzaal (NL) ... They have made several concert recordings for Klara, Musique 3 and Radio France.

L'Horizon funèbre is their first CD recording.

L'Horizon funèbre "Schubert / Janácek”

Taurus Quartet made its debut in June ’13, with a concert of the two Janáček quartets at Festival Musiq3 in Flagey, Brussels. Both these performances were broadcast live on Belgian radio and received critical acclaim. Since then, the quartet has performed the late string quartets of Schubert and both Janácek quartets very often in concert. After four years they feel it is the moment to capture their versions of this marvellous music on CD.

The combination of these two works on one CD is unique in the field. Despite the fact that there is almost a century between these two compositions, there are some striking similarities. They are final string quartets, written just before the death of these composers; reflecting on life and celebrating it, both with their own unique expression and both overwhelming in their extremes.

"L'Horizon funèbre"
Schubert String Quartet no.15 in G (1826) 45 '

Janácek Quartet no.2 "Intimate Letters" (1928) 25 '

Schubert's last string quartet is a magnum opus, a work in which he describes the greatness of life in all its dimensions, by using unprecedented sound effects and dynamic extremes. The first movement has the rhythm as a motor, the heartbeat of the music. The following movement combines the most tender singing with fierce and wild outbursts. A nervousness in the scherzo with a flashback to a touching, naive and child-like tune in the trio. And a wonderful finale, in which sadness and euforia go hand in hand at any time.

In his dying years Janáček wrote a musical reflection on the 600 letters written to his great platonic love, the 38 years younger Kamila. The extremes that resound here are overwhelming... the pain, sadness and anger, but also pure love, tenderness and ecstasy have perhaps never been so humanly and directly expressed as in this work.

The recording

For this production Taurus Quartet will work together with Yannick Willox’ Acoustic Recordings Service. For 20 years he has been a reference for excellent recording quality, resulting in numerous award-winning recordings.

Explicit! Records was an independent label, from 1998 to 2004, founded by Benjamin Dieltjens and Yannick Willox. From 2004 till 2013, Explicit worked with Fuga Libera (Outhere Records).

From 2017 Explicit resumes its activity as a CD-label in collaboration with Etcetera Records. For reference see this website: http://www.acousticrecordingservice.be/ index.html.

The recording will take place in the Academy Hall in St.Truiden. This is one of the country's best chamber music halls in terms of acoustic, and especially for string quartets.

This recording is the first of the double CD. The second CD features other works by Schubert and Janácek and will be recorded in December 2017.
