This is a story which is based on an idea by Glenn Hellemans and written by Wouter Wiggeleer (‘How Can I Help’).
Background actors may cause a lot of stress for cast and crew on the film set. Quite often actors and actresses have to play an emotionally difficult scene while the crew is mostly confined to strict time schedules. If a scene needs to be retaken because an extra stands out too much, because he is coughing too loudly or his mobile phone starts ringing, this will provide stress and will take a lot of time and money to do it all over again.
Of course many more things might go wrong with background acting. Instead of making a boring documentary while summing up all the instructions for walk-ins, our team has chosen to incorporate all the ‘does and donts’ for background actors into a fiction movie. In this way we want to show what is allowed or not on the set.
What is ExtraZ?
Extras? Who are they? Where do they come from and what exactly are they doing? But most of all: what are they NOT supposed to do?
Background actors are often underestimated. A movie or television series can’t simply be produced without them. Of course life on set is not all roses, because one extra can mess up the whole scene despite the perfect performance of a professional actor. ‘ExtraZ’ provides kind of ‘does and donts’ of background acting, embedded in the sensation, emotion and humour of life on the set.
The story takes place in the house of the DeClaer family, a rich family back in the seventies. We get to know the head of family, Nicolas, his wife Maria, their spoilt son Viktor and their cocky, stubborn daughter Babette. Maria’s parents, Roger and Suzanne, and her sister Monique also live in the house.
The family wants to throw a party, but they don’t have many friends to invite. Finally they are obliged to hire people who have to act being the family’s friends and acquaintances.
What about life on set?
Because we want to focus on life on the set, we need two initial scripts. The first one involves the series that covers the life of family DeClaer, whereas the other script works out the ‘does and donts’ of background acting , which we want to emphasize. This implies that the fiction script about the family will only be partly worked out as a fundamental basis for the movie ’ExtraZ’.
The exact dates are not known yet, but the takes are due for spring 2015.
It would be confusing to cast professional actors as extras. That’s why we were looking for some hidden talent among the extras. Of course we need several professional actors (Ini Massez, Carry Goossens,...) as well to play the role of the family members. This way every spectator can easily notice the difference between the fiction part and the background actors.
Apart from the professional crew we also need a fictitious one to play the crew in the television series. For this purpose mainly background actors (extras) will be involved, who will get very precise instructions from the professional crew to make things seem as realistic as possible.
The soundtrack will be composed especially for this movie.
This movie intends to be a comical, amusing instruction video for extras and film production firms. It can also be used for educational purposes: teachers at film and production schools can show their students life as it is on set.
On the one hand this movie wants the public to get acquainted with background acting or just have a good time. On the other hand, active background actors will get some interesting tips and tricks for their next visit on a set. This way we intend to avoid that quite some precious time is spilled by the mistakes made by extras and to make life on set easier and more comfortable for everyone.
Every production costs money. This production may be a rather expensive one because of the variety of functions. It is essential to be financially strong in order to get a certain production value. All financial help is very welcome and will be appreciated a lot. We are investigating different ways of possibilities for fundraising.

Unknown financial status makes it a treat that the movie will not be as completed as it could be. The more people who sponsor, the better the movie will be.
