My name is Bart Van Obbergen Pérez. I study music since I was eight years old in different ways. Music school, classical guitar, music high school, electric guitar, piano, singing and in between everything I made music on the computer. This opened my way of possibilities. I bought a portable recorder so I could record everywhere and everything, literally everything: A one hour bus ride, a coat hanger, eating cookies, mouth sounds in general, plants, cardboards, … . I collected an arsenal of sounds in my virtual library. Like a Pokémon I evolved in my music.
I always had love for Latino music. I have Latino blood so that explains a lot. This love strengthened when we went to Bolivia in 2012 to visit our family. The culture and everything around me gave me an explosion full of inspiration. I recorded everything with my portable recorder. The airplane messages, sounds on the street, … .
Every 3 or 4 years we try to visit our family in Bolivia. As a little boy of 14 years, you don’t realize where you are. You stay with your family for a month and don’t look further than that. This changed in 2012. Since then I always carry a jar of Latino spices that I blend in my music.
Currently I’m in my final year of Bachelor in the PXL music, Hasselt, Belgium. Electronic music is one of the six main instruments you can choose on your enrollment.
I see myself as an electronic composer. It was the best choice I made. I am very creative and have the freedom to do my thing in this course. The first two years are obviously with more theory to master the DAW “Ableton Live”.

I would spend the month February in Bolivia to field record. This is the plan:
I depart from Brussels and arrive in Santa Cruz de la Sierra. There I will take a plane to Trinidad and stay there for two nights in the jungle.
Here I record the amazing sounds of the Bolivian jungle.
After Trinidad I travel to Sucre where my Grandmother lives and a big part of my family. I would like to record my Grandmother.
The city itself will give me gigabytes of sounds! In Sucre I’ll take a bus to Tarabuco. It’s a small village that still has traditional people living there.
Here I’ll immortalize the pure talents of the traditional musicians. I also would like to play the instruments to make little samples.
After the “Sucre chapter” finishes, I continue to La Paz.
I made contacts there through a bolivian friend that lives here in Belgium. They are electronic composers like me.They will help me to find the hidden treasures.
February is the month of Carnival which is an important event in Bolivia and South America. Carnaval de Oruro is the most famous one of Bolivia.
Full of parades with traditional music and outfits! I will record there for two days.
This would be the end of my journey.
I have a big family in Bolivia. That is a way to save money for the cost of travel. My portable recorder is a ZOOM h4n. It has two inputs so I can plugin a normal microphone and a piezo-electric microphone. This give me more options to record sounds.
All the sounds I record during my journey I process it into an album. As mentioned in the acquaintance I use Ableton Live.
Ableton is a digital audio workstation where I load and manipulate the sounds. In combination with the recorded sounds, live instruments (quena flute, charrango, percussions, kalimba, vocal, …) and my crazy mind I will make my debut album
This project will be presented in concerts and shared with the world by internet
